EP 1: Friendship is Magic Part 1
Rating: 6 5 6
The very first episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic! Let's begin this journey.
So to start, we get a lore dump about the Alicorn Sisters except they're actually referred to as unicorns in this segment. I'm assuming that the term "alicorn" hadn't been repurposed to mean both a unicorn and pegasus together at this point. It's also possible that they had but refrained from using it because at this time, alicorn had a different meaning and kids wouldn't have understood what an alicorn was. We also learn about the Elements of Harmony in this first segment. Then we enter the actual show. Twilight Sparkle reading a book that is the story we just heard. Afterwards, we get the theme song we all know and either love or really hate.
The very first scene after the theme song, some ponies that appear to be Twilight's friends come across her telling her about a get-together their friend Moondancer is having. Twilight then makes the excuse that she has a lot of studying to do to get out of going to Moondancer's party and then runs off. Considering what we will eventually learn became of Moondancer later in the series because of Twilight rejecting going to her party, this scene is a lot darker considering that context.
We then see Twilight go up to what is presumably her home where she runs into Spike resulting in destroying a gift we learn was for Moondancer. Again, if you know, this scene hits you different. Dear god, that poor Moondancer.
We learn that the Mare in the Moon is as Spike puts it, "an old pony's tale" revealing that ponies are aware of the legend of Nightmare Moon and possibly Princess Luna but so much time had passed that it has become a legend and not a part of history. Further, Twilight reads the legend from a book stating it's a myth from olden pony times.
After the legend says that the return of Nightmare Moon is happening soon, Twilight decides to warn Celestia, telling Spike to take a note. Except Twilight is a complete wordcel telling Spike to write down big, convoluted words that only exist to sound fancy. Then right after, we see Nightmare Moon in the hourglass as Twilight walks but this is a basic detail everyone knows about already. It's revealed that the Summer Sun Celebration takes place "the day after tomorrow" placing the very first day in MLP:FiM on June 19 assuming it's following 2010's summer solstice. We don't know if ponies use an equivalent of the Gregorian Calendar but the world does seem to follow how Earth's years work and North American seasons and months later retconned to moons do exist in MLP:FiM. So when necessary, we will use Gregorian dates. Twilight then has another wordcel moment. Don't use big fancy words just to sound smart, kids.
Celestia then responds to Twilight's warning with what is pretty much "LOL, get a life". Twilight has to go to Ponyville to supervise the Summer Sun Celebration and make some friends.
"Make some friends!"
"The fate of Equestria does not rest on me making friends." OK, Twilight.
Spike convinces Twilight to at least try to talk to a pony who happens to be Pinkie Pie. After saying "hello", Pinkie flips the fuck out and zooms off in a hilarious introduction. Then we meet Applejack and her family. This is also where that sad Apple Bloom image used in a lot of those old memes comes from.
Then right after this, we see DeviantArt Twilight Sparkle.
Then Rainbow Dash crashes into her and we get this screenshot I find really amusing.
Now, full disclosure, Rainbow Dash is my favorite of the Mane 6. I will explain a possible reasoning in the next episode since it will be more appropriate.
Rainbow Dash says "My very own patented Rainblow Dry", implying patents exist in Equestria. Now, this just an expression but dear god do I fucking hate the existence of patents. Please, Equestria, please don't actually have patents. I could go on a whole thing about how patents are evil but I've briefly talked about it in other articles so I won't waste your time... even more at least.
So next Rainbow Dash goes on about the Wonderbolts and how she wants to join them to which Twilight scoffs at her prompting RD to claim she can clear the sky in 10 seconds flat which Twilight dares her to do. 10 seconds later Twilight is shut the fuck up at at RD's proven awesomeness.
Then we meet Rarity. Next.
We then meet Fluttershy in the funniest and cutest introduction. I just love how Fluttershy shies away and then whines; it's so adorable and funny. Then after Spike reveals himself, Fluttershy drops the shy act in absolute excitement at the baby dragon. Fluttershy reveals she's never seen a baby dragon and that she didn't know dragons could talk. This reveals that Ponyville is secluded from other races or dragons at least. Twilight then goes back into pissy mode.
Next scene when Twilight finally gets home after having to deal with all the crap she had to put up with, it's then revealed that a giant surprise party is at her house. Twilight is not amused. This is also when we see Derpy Hooves cross-eyed in the background for the first time and I love Derpy!
After getting tired of dealing with everyone's bullshit, Twilight then secludes herself in her room away from everyone, similar to what I usually did as a child. I fucking hated parties. Still do.
So now we're at the actual Selection for Solar Sanity or whatever it was called and Lyra is fucking excited!
So now they're supposed to reveal Celestia to do the sun thing but she's gone. Mayor mare tells "everypony" to remain calm. I think this is the first utterance of the word. If I'm wrong, I don't care, I'm not going back rewatching the whole thing again. As you will later find throughout this season, they will be very inconsistent with their language in this regard.
Finally, Nightmare Moon reveals herself and we get to see these adorable little fillies:
Nightmare Moon then declares her plans and the episode ends.
Now, the ratings. This is an amazing first episode. From when I first saw it in 2014 and when I recently started my rewatching. On my initial viewing for this, I was giggling like a schoolgirl throughout the entire time. It may have been because I was watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic for the first time in 5 years but still, I found the episode hilarious and thoroughly entertaining earning this episode 6 EV. In terms of vibe, there wasn't really anything to 'vibe' with or any lessons and crap expressed but since it was the start of MLP:FiM, a show itself with vibe I gave it 4 VB at first but due to matching two-parters, it gets 5 VB in actuality. For development, we get a lore dump, we meet the main characters, we see a little bit of Ponyville. We get a lot of development in this first episode that is truly worth 6 DV.
This took a little under 3 hours to write. What have I gotten myself into?
EP 2: Friendship is Magic Part 2
Rating: 4 5 6
We start the episode with Nightmare Moon zapping some guards right of the the air. Next scene the girls confront Twilight about the Elements of Harmony. Pinkie makes Twilight feel like an idiot when she couldn't find the book about the Elements of Harmony which was simply under 'E'. The episode then just straight up spoils which character is which element.
Now they go off into the Everfree Forest. As they enter, we see 5 stars twinkle. I am assuming this symbolises the 5 ponies other than Twilight with the sky possibly representing herself like on her cutie mark. I also believe there may be some significance to where the stars shine and possibly when too. I looked at constellation maps but couldn't find a match, the closest being one of the dippers but those don't contain just 5 stars. This is something you could look into unless it's already been solved in which case, let me know.
Applejack reveals her element of honesty and jumps down a cliff like a 2D sidescroller. Now the ponies come across an angry manticore. It tries to attack Rarity but she dodges and just straight up hits the damn thing. The other ponies then harass it until Fluttershy stops them to help the manticore revealing her element of kindness.
It is then revealed that the ponies are scared of trees. Pinkie then does the first song in the series Giggle at the Ghosties. Fun fact: Long ago, I was watching this episode with someone and then someone else looked over while at the part in the song where Pinkie goes "Ha. Ha. Ha." and was visibly confused and said something like "What the fuck?". I tried to get this other person to at least watch an episode of MLP a few times but they never gave in. Here's the frame I was paused on writing this; thought it was cute.
We then meet Steven Magnet, the magnificent sea serpent. The white one helps him with his troubles and we move on.
Rainbow Dash is next to reveal her element. She also reveals that she has been trying to get into the Wonderbolts for-like-ever. This could imply she's applied many times before but keeps getting rejected or if there's no application process, she's been trying to get their attention for I assume years. She then proves her element of loyalty and whatever.
Continuing from last episode, Rainbow Dash is my favorite of the Mane 6. I couldn't explain exactly why but I recently realized a potential reason. A lot of people I assume would like characters that are like themselves. However, personality-wise, I'm more like a mix of Twilight and Fluttershy, both usually have been my 2nd and 3rd favorites, Fluttershy leading. Rainbow Dash however is actually pretty opposite to my personality but I don't believe it's the whole 'opposites attract' crap. I have a different theory. This theory being that Rainbow Dash is actually a sort of idealized, good version of my inner attitude. Outwardly, my traits are closer to Twilight and Fluttershy but my inner attitude isn't. If you were to take my inner attitude and convert it into positive outward expression, I believe Rainbow Dash would actually be what I would be the most like in this scenario. This concept I find very interesting and it would also be interesting to study other people and their favorite characters in media and see if this pattern persists.
Also, the only virtue I can relate to is loyalty. Magic isn't real. I don't relate to honesty because I have manipulated the virtue to my benefit many times and used people thinking I'm the 'couldn't tell a fib' type to my advantage. Knowing my past, I'm definitely not kind. I'm a greedy little cunt that hoards wealth so I'm not generous, though I do hold very anticapitalist beliefs when it comes to certain stuff that I do indeed practice myself and not just spout such as not monetizing my publishings unlike the vast majority of people that make crap, especially the YouTube losers but I've already written about that in Profit Corrupts Art. The only other element I can sort of relate to is laughter but even then, I much like to laugh at things for my own amusement, I don't care about bringing joy to others and when I do, it's just that they also like the same tragedy-based humor or making fun of people too; it is laughter at the detriment of others which is much more of a corrupted laughter as Fallout Equestria would put it. Loyalty is the only uncorrupted virtue I could possibly possess of these six as I've always been loyal to people I've liked and things I've believed in.
And now, they finally find the Elements of Harmony only to be disrupted by Nightmare Moon who yoinks Twilight away as she tries to activate them. Twilight then rushes Nightmare Moon, teleporting past her to get to the Elements but the plan fails and Nightmare Moon destroys the Elements and leaves Twilight completely distraught giving us this image.
So then Twilight's friends return and they kick Nightmare Moon's ass with magical rainbow power after a monologue about the Elements.
Herobrine sighting #1
After defeating Nightmare Moon, Applejack says "I reckon we really do represent the Elements of Friendship." which is possibly a script error which may mean that the Elements of Harmony may have originally been called the Elements of Friendship. Celestia appears and reveals that her inaction towards the return of Nightmare Moon was all part of her plan to get Twilight to make friends and stuff. Celestia confronts Luna, calling her her sister which surprises the ponies. Celestia asks now Luna for her friendship and Pinkie falls over. Luna accepts. They actually fixed her.
There's a town celebration and Celestia then tells Twilight she's staying in Ponyville and thus the adventures begin.
It was entertaining enough to warrant 4 EV but I don't think I was as giddy watching this episode initially. 5 VB is because of the ending. The Mane 6 realize the meaning of their friendship and Celestia welcomes Luna back as her sister and friend. 6 DV because of shared DV ratings.
